People often hear about COPD, whether through commercials advertising new medications and you start wondering what exactly it is. If you have recently been diagnosed with COPD, this will help you get started.
What exactly is COPD?
COPD is a disease in the lungs that makes it difficult to breathe and often feels like an elephant is sitting on your chest. Sometimes it can be activated through exercise when you normally feel fine, while in other cases, you have difficulty breathing all the time.
How is COPD caused?
While making it hard to breathe, COPD is very different from Asthma. COPD is caused by damage to the lungs, often through years of smoking tobacco or marijuana. This disease is typically a mix of two other diseases:
- Emphysema – The air sacs that normally expand and contract as you breathe are now damaged and cannot expand as easily, making it difficult to breathe.
- Chronic Bronchitis – this involves the airways in the lungs becoming filled with mucus and becoming enflamed, or swollen, making it difficult to breathe.
